Chadron State College Campus Arboretum Volunteers will be participating in a variety of activities Sept. 20, starting at 9 am at the Sandoz Center. Their activities will focus on preparing the campus landscape for fall.

CSC horticulturist Lucinda Mays said she is excited to have a mix of work for the volunteers.

“It is Family Day, so it will be added fun for us to see and interact with visitors,” she said.

The group will be planting trees near Edna Work Hall and the parking lot south of Old Admin, cleaning flower beds in front of Memorial Hall and preparing Flag Plaza for Veteran's Day ceremonies.

The group will also be recognizing the retirement of the Nebraska State Grand Champion blue spruce which has been a landmark on campus for decades. Nebraska Forest Service personnel will be set up near the tree on the Dean’s Green to discuss the Champion Trees program and urban tree health. Campus Arboretum Volunteers will be available to discuss with visitors potential uses of the wood from the Champion.

“We hope to have many who will come to stand a few moments in the shade of our grand old tree.” Mays said.

Families with children are always welcome to participate in CAV workdays. For details, contact Lucinda Mays at 308-430-4186 or Jane Darnell at 308-430-2204.
