Career and Academic Planning Services is serving an increased number of students since moving to the King Library last semester.

"We see a lot more students here than we did in Crites. Our services are consistent with the Library Learning Commons. We are a good student resource in a logical and accessible location," said Deena Kennell, director of Career Services.

Kennell's plans for the 2014-15 academic year involve an increasing the number of professional development workshops for students.

She will also be actively developing new relationships with employer partners like the U.S. Forest Service Public Land Corps, a work and education program responsible for rehabilitation, restoration and repair of public lands resources and infrastructures.

Services provided by the office, which is open year-round, include the maintenance of credential files for pre-service teachers. Kennell’s assistant, Janet Hartman manages the credential files, a physical and a virtual job vacancy board and the annual placement report that shows the employment status of CSC graduates who respond to a questionnaire.

Events hosted by the office include the annual Career Fair and Teacher Interview Day. Students are able to meet potential employers, share their resumes and, in some cases, interview at these events.

Assessments like the Myers Briggs Type Indicator and the Strong Interest Inventory are also available to help students research the career fields that best match their values, personality and interests. Resumes and other job search documents can be subitted for editing as well.

In addition to offering these services, Kennell will also teach part of an introductory course this fall titled “The Academic Life,” that focuses on study skills, time management and career and major exploration.

Hartman can be reached at jhartman@csc.edu or 308-432-6292. A full description of services can be seen at: csc.edu/careerservices.
