Ivy Day, graduation at Chadron State this weekend

The 2007-08 school year will conclude at Chadron State College this weekend when Ivy Day and two commencement exercises take place.

Ivy Day dates back to 1920 and gives recognition to the college’s outstanding seniors in each academic area. It will be at 7 p.m. Friday in Memorial Hall. Commencement for those earning graduate degrees will be at 8 a.m. Saturday in Memorial Hall. The ceremonies for those earning bachelor’s degrees will be at 10 a.m. in Armstrong Gymnasium.

There are 296 candidates for degrees, including 46 who will receive graduate degrees. The total is the largest at Chadron State since 2000.

In addition to recognizing the outstanding seniors, a king and queen will be crowned during Ivy Day.

The royalty candidates were selected from the seniors who are members of Cardinal Key and Blue Key National Honor Societies. The queen candidates are Nicole Hagan of Ogallala, Audra Liebig of North Platte, Megan Pelton of Chadron and Joslynne Simpson and Kylee Stanley, both of Alliance. The king candidates are Tyler Dickey of Morrill, Charles Funk of O’Neill, Alex Laudenklos of Monroe, Daniel McDermott of Anselmo and Brian Rochelle of Casper, Wyo.

Simpson will be the Ivy Day orator representing Cardinal Key. The Blue Key orator will be Tyler Thompson of Gering.

The faculty greeter at Ivy Day will be Brad Fillmore, who is leaving the college this spring after serving as a science professor the past seven years.

Dr. Ron Miller, who is retiring after serving as a sociology professor at Chadron State the past 32 years, will be the speaker at the commencement for graduate-degree students.

Speaking at the undergraduate commencement will be Dr. Kelvin Sharp, a 1979 graduate of Chadron State who is president of South Plains College at Levelland, Texas. He also will receive the college’s Distinguished Alumni Award.

Gary Bieganski of Chadron will extend greetings from the Board of Trustees of the Nebraska State College System at both commencements.
