Fisher Qualifies for Nationals

CHADRON – Chadron State College student Mekenna Fisher of Hershey, Nebraska, earned second place in both the Impromptu Speaking and Job Interview contests at the FBLA-Collegiate State Leadership Conference on March 28-29 in Kearney, Nebraska. Fisher qualified to compete in both events at the National Leadership Conference later this spring in Dallas.
Fisher was the only CSC student who attended in person, while Abigail Russell of Hay Springs, Nebraska, competed in Principles of Finance remotely.
The FBLA advisors are Dr. Gary Dusek and Dr. Nicholas Fisher. Dusek, Chair of the Business Academy, was present at the state competition to support Fisher's efforts, and Dr. Fisher will accompany her to Dallas for the national conference.
“We are incredibly proud of MeKenna’s hard work, professionalism, and success, and we’re excited to see her represent Chadron State College on the national stage,” Dusek said.
Fisher, a Rangeland Management major with a focus in Livestock Management and minoring in Legal Studies and Media Production, said she likes the excitement of impromptu speaking. Her topics were how to balance personal debt with small business equity and how to identify misinformation and bias in media.
“I’ve always enjoyed public speaking, and I like to participate in it every chance I get,” Fisher said.
Fisher juggled a busy schedule during the conference weekend, including a college rodeo and a broadcast production awards ceremony.
“Working around those time constraints to be present at all my events was more than a little challenging,” she said.
Fisher said she looks forward to the national conference.
“I love getting to test my abilities against other top speakers from around the nation and learning from them,” she said. “There are also a lot of fun opportunities outside of competition for personal development.”
