CHADRON – Chadron State College student Ty’Jean Green of Compton, California, is the January Project Strive/TRiO Student of the Month.

Green said he transferred from Western Oregon University to join CSC’s football team after a major life event left him looking for new experiences.

“I liked the idea of starting over and being somebody else,” Green said. “I like to give myself a fresh start over and over again so that I can reflect and learn where I mess up.”

According to Green, football was important to him when he came to CSC.

“It’s not necessarily that I knew I wanted to play football in college, but I knew that I wanted to play for as long as I could physically and mentally,” Green said.

Green is pursuing a mathematics major with a minor in psychology. After graduating from CSC, he plans to attend Oregon State University or Georgia Institute of Technology to earn his master’s degree in mathematics or accounting.

He plans to become a teacher and a coach so he can positively impact young children the way he has been positively impacted.

“My career interests as a coach and teacher pertain to making a big impact on as many kids as I can,” Green said. “Because coaches and teachers have done everything for me, and I truly don’t believe I would be here today without them. I want to be able to give that experience to someone else.”

Green’s interest in mathematics stems from his desire to succeed in everything he does, while also challenging himself to constantly improve.

“Math is just something I’ve always been good at,” Green said. “But it’s still challenging in certain aspects no matter how long someone does it. I love numbers and figuring out how they work and felt like math would continuously challenge me and make me work for my degree.”

One of Green’s biggest goals is to graduate college and be a role model for others.

“Growing up, nobody ever talked about graduating college, or even high school,” Green said. “I just wanted to be different, and I wanted to be a role model for younger kids and my younger siblings. Graduating is a big deal to me. Nobody in my family has ever graduated and I want to be the first for future generations.”

Jordan Haas, Instructor of Mathematics, is one of Green’s favorite professors.

“He walks us through everything, and he is fun and relatable. He’s real and I admire him as a person because he is always himself,” Green said.

Green is a member of the ping pong club and Chadron Christian Church, both of which he describes as important to him.

He enjoys the competitive aspect of the ping pong club and appreciates the sport for its beauty.

“I joined the ping pong club because I love the sport and I’m good at it,” Green said. “There are not a lot of people in Chadron that love playing ping pong or do it competitively, so getting together is nice because it helps us all improve. It’s kind of like art: it doesn’t get to show its true self unless the people playing are really good.”

Green was baptized at Chadron Christian Church in 2022 and believes he has grown in faith a lot since he came to Chadron.

“I’ve had a lot of moments in my life before I came here that tested my faith and my trust in God, but I feel like I’ve grown so much here because this community specifically is great for people who want to grow in faith. So many people are on the same journey as you are, and there are so many leaders here who want to see you succeed and will do whatever they can to help you be where you want to be. There are just so many good people,” he said.

When Green isn’t involved in campus activities or working, he said he enjoys reading, writing, and working out.

Reading is important to Green because he believes it expands his vocabulary and helps him learn and better himself. He particularly enjoys self-help books.

Green enjoys writing because he feels like it takes him away from reality and makes him think about his thoughts and try to put them into words which he believes is important.

Green is currently completing Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) suicide prevention training and believes everyone should complete it so they can be prepared to help others.
