Esports team wins Rocket League Open Plus Championship
CHADRON – Chadron State College’s Rocket League Black won the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) championship game against Ohio Northern University Thursday. The team finished the season undefeated in the EAST 12B Conference Champion III division playing against Sam Houston State University, Florida International University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Rochester Institute of Technology, Drexel University, Grand Valley State University, and Northern Michigan University.
The team members are Trevor Severson of Rapid City, South Dakota, Evan Kirk of Grand Island, Nebraska, and Trey Hedges of Aberdeen, South Dakota. The coach, Adam Stone, Dr. Ryan Morgan, Dean of the School of Business, Mathematics, and Science, and the team captain Cooper Reichman of Chappell, Nebraska cheered them from the sidelines during the game. This is the first official championship the CSC Esports team has won.
The players credited the championship win to teamwork.
“As a first-time competitive player, it’s exciting coming in and winning our first tournament. I’m excited for next semester with my teammates,” Severson said.
Kirk said consistency and talking with his teammates prepared him for the match.
“After not playing with my teammates for a few weeks because of the break, I was a bit nervous going into the game. After warmup, that went away and the team took control,” Hedges said.
Reichman mentioned how proud he was of his team and their dedication to the game.
“I've seen many good players, but not with their teamwork and individual abilities. They went far beyond what I asked of them and I’m glad to have the chance to play and practice with them,” Reichman said.
Morgan praised the team's season.
“This game demonstrates the hard work they have all put in to show what CSC Esports is capable of. Coach Stone and the players have represented us in the best way possible,” Morgan said.
Stone echoed the praise offered by Morgan.
“I am so proud of the athletes and what they were able to accomplish together. This Rocket League team has amazing chemistry, and we should all look forward to seeing what they do in the future,” Stone said.
The Esports teams will resume practice in January.
