Eagle Wellness Program unveiled

CHADRON – Associate Professor of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Dr. Britt Helmbrecht unveiled the Campus Wellness program in a message to campus Sept. 21. She said the program is intended to prioritize well-being and foster the abilities of students to achieve optimal health by providing and promoting strategic wellness activities.
“It’s important to note wellness is not a destination, but a journey. As a collaborative, we’re committed to creating a culture of wellness so every Eagle can soar,” said Helmbrecht, who was named the Campus Wellness Officer earlier this year.
A website for the program has been established at www.csc.edu/wellness. Those who are interested can also follow the program on Instagram @csc.wellness.
Among her goals for the program, she said she would like to have a campus culture that erases any negative stigma associated with mental illness.
Helmbrecht also encouraged employees to set an example for healthy living through their behaviors.
“As ambassadors of wellness, we can hold each other accountable, boost morale, and partake in incentivized opportunities for health behavior change. When students see the employees practicing healthy behaviors, they are likely to join in,” she said.
The steering committee created to guide wellness efforts is co-chaired by Dean of Student Affairs Austen Stephens and Helmbrecht, who said the Campus Wellness Collaborative members represent many facets of campus.
When rolling out the program to campus, Helmbrecht indicated the collaborative members will analyze results from the American College Health Association National College Health Assessment to make data-driven decisions for future plans.
Along with the program announcement, Helmbrecht unveiled marks she plans to use to bring awareness to wellness events occurring across campus.
“The colors in the logo represent colors for each dimension of wellness. The goal is to share this logo far and wide to bring awareness to the number and type of activities that double as wellness activities. For example, academic workshops support intellectual wellness and Intramural sports can be considered physical and social wellness. We're all practicing wellness, even if we don't realize it,” Helmbrecht said.
She invited faculty and staff interested in developing and promoting wellness activities to contact her at bhelmbrecht@csc.edu.
