CHADRON – Chadron State College Music Professor Dr. Joel Schreuder has been named the Director of the Gillette Chamber Singers. The commitment will not interfere with Schreuder’s CSC responsibilities.

“I’m interested in the community of musicians there and excited about being part of it. It will be a very busy time, but it’s important to branch out,” Schreuder said. “Being recognized in Wyoming will help with recruiting for CSC.”

The 320-mile round trip to rehearse with the group on Sundays will be a challenge, but Schreuder is looking forward to the opportunity. He is still getting to know the group that includes at least two CSC graduates.

Paul Ormseth, a member of the Gillette group for 30 years, notified Schreuder about the opening. Ormseth, assistant director of the group, has been bringing his Moorcroft, Wyoming, students to CSC’s High Plains Band and Choir Festival for years and Schreuder has conducted a few choir festivals in Wyoming.

“After we have a couple performances, I’ll have a better idea of my vision for the group. I’ve planned the October concert, and December is quite busy with a fundraiser,” Schreuder said.

Schreuder will meet with the board via Zoom to plan the spring schedule that could include a joint spring concert with the Powder River Symphony Orchestra.

The Gillette Chamber Singers was established by Mike McDaniel in 1986 with 16 members, according to Schreuder. McDaniel was the director until 1990 and there have been three directors since then. The group performs a European tour about every four or five years. Although the size of the group changes, it has peaked with about 40 members.
