CHADRON – Dr. Mary Jo Carnot, professor of Psychological Sciences, and Chadron State College student Kelvana Demeritte of Nassau, Bahamas, presented on Mindfulness: Associations with Well-Being, Cognitive Flexibility, Depression, Anxiety and Stress in College Students, at the 2021 Association for Psychological Science (APS) Virtual Convention May 26-27.

“This interactive virtual event allowed psychological researchers around the world to connect and discuss important research and theory in psychological science,” Carnot said.

Carnot worked with students in Advanced Research Methods (PSYC 499) during Fall 2020 to generate ideas and background for researching the relationship between mindfulness and depression, anxiety, and stress. A sample of 206 students, mainly in undergraduate psychology classes, were surveyed during Spring 2021. Demeritte assisted Carnot with analyzing data from the surveys and developing a poster for the convention.

Survey results indicated that mindfulness was associated with reduced depression, anxiety and stress, and with increased cognitive flexibility and well-being, even if people had not received specific mindfulness training.

Demeritte, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree from CSC in May, is working in her field and plans to start a master’s degree program.

“It was a pleasure to work with Dr. Carnot. She is a caring, understanding, and proficient professor. I encourage everyone to take care of their mental health. No man is an island and we all are capable of helping one another,” Demeritte said.
