Wingler named November Project Strive/TRiO Student of the Month

Wingler, a sophomore from Hot Springs, South Dakota, said she chose CSC because it was close to home and she appreciated CSC’s welcoming community and affordability. Wingler recently changed her major from Education to Social Work.

“Right now, I am unsure of what the future looks like career-wise until I decide what work I would like to specialize in. As time goes on and I get more education about each path, I am sure I will figure it out,” Wingler said.

CSC Social Work Adjunct Instructor Sara Wellnitz said she appreciates Wingler’s contributions in the classroom. 

“Alyssa is a bright young lady who always has something insightful to say. I enjoy having her in my class,” Wellnitz said.

Wingler’s favorite class this semester is Family Law taught by Professor Dr. Lisette Leesch.

“I really enjoy this class because Dr. Leesch makes the hour exciting through her great personality. I also have never taken any form of law class before, so it is a great change of perspective for me,” Wingler said.

Leesch said she is impressed with Wingler’s genuine interest in the material and her willingness to participate in the discussion to enhance the learning environment.

“Alyssa is a joy to have in my Family Law class. She deserves the recognition, and I cannot think of anyone more deserving,” Leesch said.

Amanda Lewin, Project Strive/Trio Retention Specialist, said Wingler winning the Young Eagle Award is indicative of her leadership skills.

“Along with being awarded the November Student of the Month, Alyssa has also been awarded the Young Eagle Award for the 2019-2020 Rising Sophomore Award Ceremony. The Young Eagle Award is given to an upcoming sophomore who has a zest for life and learning, a strong commitment to CSC and the community, and demonstrates belief in a goodness of all people. This award embodies who Alyssa is as a person,” Lewin said.

Lewin also noted Wingler’s compassion for others.

“With her cheerful nature and upbeat attitude, she gets along with everyone and makes new students feel welcome. She demonstrates an openness and empathy for others, which will help her in her future as a social worker,” Lewin said.

In her free time, Wingler enjoys painting and going to art-related events on campus.

“The events that the Residence Life Association puts on are always fun, so I try to check them out. I also enjoy going on walks around campus or on C-Hill,” Wingler said.

Chadron State College’s Project Strive/TRiO program, located in the lower level of the King Library, is an academic enrichment program committed to help students succeed. Project Strive also focuses on career exploration, cultural and social enrichment and self-awareness. To be eligible for the program, a student must be one of the following: A first generation student where neither parent has a four-year degree, meet low-income status based on U.S. Department of Health and Human Services criteria, or have a documented disability.
