CHADRON – Chadron State College student Juan Estrada-Sanchez of Denver is the April Project Strive/TRiO Student of the Month.

Estrada-Sanchez, a sophomore, said attending CSC allows him to further his education while continuing his football career.

“Playing football here has given me the opportunity to be part of a team and continue playing the sport that I love,” Estrada-Sanchez said. “My favorite memory has been winning the Dixie State game.”

As a Sports and Recreation Management major with an Athletic Training Preparation option, Estrada-Sanchez plans to pursue a career in athletic training or physical therapy. He said that career will allow him to combine his interests.

“I really like sports and I want to be in a branch of medicine so I can help people. Being in this major gives me a chance to put both together,” Estrada-Sanchez said. “I like knowing that I am learning how to help athletes get better and continue to help them improve.”

Head Football Coach Jay Long said he is proud of the way Estrada-Sanchez has matured in the classroom.

“Juan has taken advantage of his opportunities and made academics a priority, which has helped significantly in his success,” Long said.

In addition to football, Estrada-Sanchez is a member of Project Strive/TRiO.

Estrada-Sanchez said the Project Strive/TRiO staff wants to help students succeed.

“The people I have met through the program have been friendly and supportive,” Estrada-Sanchez said.

Since joining the program his first semester, Estrada-Sanchez said he has used its book checkout, advising, and counseling services and attended events.

Project Strive/TRiO Director Jennifer Schaer said Estrada-Sanchez has grown as a student and as an individual.

“Juan is an example of how Project Strive can help students grow and be successful,” Schaer said. “During the fall of his freshman year, Juan was struggling with classes and adjusting to college. One of his football coaches told him to apply and be a part of Strive. Juan did just that. He was willing to listen and wanted to make changes. He talked to the staff and decided to change majors. Once he did, he really liked his classes, was getting good grades, and was more involved. It has been great to watch him change and enjoy his small victories.”

Estrada-Sanchez said he feels supported at CSC.

“What I like about Chadron is that I mostly know where to go whenever I need help in something, but if I don’t know where to go, I could always ask someone for help,” Estrada-Sanchez said. “I really like the support that this school gives.”

Chadron State College’s Project Strive/TRiO program, located in the lower level of the King Library, is an academic enrichment program committed to help students succeed. Project Strive also focuses on career exploration, cultural and social enrichment and self-awareness. To be eligible for the program, a student must be one of the following: A first generation student where neither parent has a four-year degree, meet low income status based on U.S. Department of Health and Human Services criteria, or have a documented disability.
