Sandoz exhibit showcases 20 displays
CHADRON – Displays ranging from Native American artifacts to photography and historic and cultural items from the High Plains Herbarium are part of “Hindsight is 20/20,” a unique exhibit, in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center Jan. 20 through March 27.
Seven interactive events planned at the Sandoz Center to supplement the exhibit include two presentations by CSC Professor Dr. Mathew Brust. The first, about lady beetles will be Feb. 11 at 3 p.m., and the second will be about butterflies March 24 at 3 p.m.
The other interactive events feature local historian Dave Nixon, CSC Security Supervisor Mark Hunt, and Steve Rolfsmeier of the High Plains Herbarium
Nixon will demonstrate flint knapping Jan. 23, Feb. 13, and March 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Hunt will give a presentation about his display Feb. 19 at 1 p.m., and Rolfsmeier will speak about the 60th anniversary of the Herbarium Feb. 25 at 2 p.m.
Displays are labeled in the following order:
1. Posters and preserved specimens of lady beetles, Mat Brust
2. Knives and replicas of handmade indigenous tools, Dave Nixon
3. Painted gourds and other Native American made art from the High Plains Herbarium, Steve Rolfsmeier
4. Vinyl records owned by Mari Sandoz, Sandoz Center staff
5. Drawings and paintings of the Crawford Mill, Laure Sinn
6. Railroad memorabilia, Sandoz Center staff
7. Letters to and from Mari Sandoz, Sandoz Center staff
8. Historic photos from Batesland’s first German Congregational Church, Mark Hunt
9. Sheriff’s patches from all 93 Nebraska counties, Mark Hunt
10. Everett Pitt Wilson exhibit, Sandoz Center staff
11. Pharmaceutical items including documents signed by Dr. Walter Reed at Fort Robinson, High Plains Herbarium
12. Photographs of northwest Nebraska, Daniel Binkard
13. Replicas of horse-drawn equipment carved by Lige Thayer
14. Timeline photos of the transition of the campus library to the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center, CSC and Sandoz Center staff
15. Boots, a horse hide and photos from the Chadron to Chicago horse race, Dawes County Historical Museum

Additionally, the Center has a selection of 1939 framed photographs taken by Dwight Kirsch in preparation of MGM making a movie based on Sandoz’s “Old Jules” on exhibit through March 30 at the Bean Broker at 202 West Second St.
