CSC mourns loss of Schaeffer

CHADRON – Dr. Susan Schaeffer, a Professor of Counseling at Chadron State College since 2003, died Sunday in Scottsbluff. She was 61

“Susan was a valued colleague who was well-respected by her peers and students,” said Chadron State College President Randy Rhine. “Susan had a friendly and welcoming attitude and her contributions to the campus will be sorely missed. I extend my deepest condolences to her family and my sympathy goes out to all the people she impacted during her life.”

Schaeffer earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a Master’s in Counseling from the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from the University of Wyoming.

Schaeffer taught several courses related to counseling and helped get several undergraduate counseling courses as suitable academic training for individuals seeking licensure as a Provisional Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor. That process was supported by the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska and Schaeffer worked long hours advocating for the courses.

Dr. Laura Gaudet, department chair, said Schaeffer was a wonderful colleague and friend who was very intuitive.

During her career at Chadron State College, Schaeffer also served as an adviser for Student Senate and was involved with the Graduate Council. 

Schaeffer is survived by her mother, Carolyn, and three younger brothers, Gary, Barry, and Ivan.
