Second annual Mini Big Event expands, gives back
CHADRON – Chadron State College’s The Big Event staff, Event Planning and Leadership (CA 239) students, and members of Project Strive/TRiO volunteered Tuesday, Nov. 5, for the second annual Mini Big Event. A total of 40 volunteers completed 10 jobsites in the Chadron community.
The Mini Big Event began last fall as a way for CSC volunteers to have another opportunity to thank the community. It also allows The Big Event staff members a chance to complete jobsites since they’re busy coordinating responsibilities during the spring event.
The Big Event Graduate Assistant Kelsey Brummels said volunteers were given the opportunity to give back and strengthen relationships that have formed with community members.
“A big reason why we started The Mini Big Event last year was to continue to build the relationships that have been formed over the years,” Brummels said. “I’m excited we expanded both our jobsite and volunteer numbers this year. It really allowed the event to represent a sample size of The Big Event.”
The Big Event Recruitment Coordinator Isioma Akwanamnye, a CSC student from Lagos, Nigeria, said the event allows volunteers to help people and foster a relationship with members of the community.
“The Mini Big Event is an opportunity for me to be able to give back to a community I love so much,” Akwanamnye said. “There’s so much joy that comes with being on staff for The Big Event, but an even greater joy comes with being able to volunteer my time and energy in doing actual yard work.”
The Big Event will return to CSC in April 2020. For more information, visit www.csc.edu/thebigevent.
