Sandoz Symposium set for Sept. 19-21
CHADRON – “Populism” will be the theme of the Pilster Lecture and Mari Sandoz Symposium Sept. 19-21. Thursday’s and Friday’s events take place at Chadron State College.
In the opening event of the symposium Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Center, Dr. Charles Postel with San Francisco State University will present the Pilster Lecture, “What were the Populists Thinking?” about late 19th and early 20th century U.S. Populism. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Registration for the Friday and Saturday events is available online until Sept. 1. Late registration begins Sept. 2.
Friday’s schedule will begin with Dr. Jeff Wells’ presentation, “The Populism of Jules Sandoz and Mari Sandoz.” Wells is an assistant professor of History with the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
During the second morning session, will feature an analysis of Sandoz’s “Capital City,” published in 1939 and often considered her most political work. Dr. Mary Clai Jones, an assistant professor of literature at CSC and Dr. Chris Steinke, an assistant professor of history at UNK, will unpack the blend of Sandoz’s fictional and historical elements.
Dr. Maria L.O. Munoz, history department chair at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, will present "The People's Populism: The Shaping and Reshaping of Populism in Latin America, 1950s-2010s" in the 11 a.m. session Friday.
The noon luncheon, for registered attendees, will feature presentation of the 2019 “In the Spirit of Mari Sandoz” Award.
Friday afternoon, northeast Nebraska farmer Graham Christensen will discuss recent activities surrounding regenerative agriculture in Nebraska. Following Christensen, CSC History Department Chair and Sandoz Board member Dr. David Nesheim will lead a panel discussion on "Populism in the Panhandle: Something Less Than a Movement."
The symposium concludes Saturday with a 9:30 a.m. session at the Bean Broker. Dr. Lisa Pollard of Lincoln will be the presenter.
