CHADRON – Chadron State College student Steven Crews is the February Project Strive/TRiO Student of the Month.

Crews, a senior interpersonal communication major from Denver, said he chose CSC because of its location and classroom sizes.

“I liked the small classrooms and how many students talked about how they had relationships with their professors. I felt that would be more beneficial for my learning,” Crews said.

Crews said the support system at CSC is what has impacted him the most during his college years.

“There was a point in time where I was not supposed to come back here because I had gotten really sick, and my doctors wanted me to stay in Colorado. I felt comfortable with the support system and my teachers here to have my best interest in mind and to know that I had people watching out for me,” Crews said.

One of those teachers is Dr. Kathleen Kirsch, professor of communication. She said she has enjoyed working with Crews.

“Steven has been persistent in his studies and as he progresses through his degree program, he is asking better questions about the way communication works and making more connections between the variables that regulate our everyday interactions,” Kirsch said.

Outside of academics, Crews has been involved in Omega Phi Rho, the men’s rugby club, and the Project Strive/TRiO program. Crews is also a Teammates mentor.

Crews, a first generation student, said his peers referred him to Project Strive.

“They were telling me about it because I worried about how I was going to get books and adjust to college. A lot of people told me I could go to Strive and they would be helpful,” Crews said.

He said he likes that the program hosts events tailored to help students learn different skills that he personally would not have looked at learning. In addition, he uses the program’s textbook, counseling and advising services.

As for his future, Crews said he is looking at union jobs, specifically working in communications.

“What attracted me to pursue interpersonal communications was taking a communications class and finding the different types of communication. I found I like interpersonal and intrapersonal the most. When looking at union work, I thought those were more necessary,” Crews said.
