Track construction approved at November Board of Trustees' meeting

The Board approved Chadron State’s request for a change order to have Adolfson & Peterson, the construction manager at risk for the football stadium renovation, to work on a $1.8 million track facility. According to Board materials, funds are available within the existing Sports Complex project budget, as well as a minimum commitment from the Chadron State Foundation of $233,723. Additional funding – that was also approved during the Nov. 16 meeting – includes LB957 bond interest proceeds and unappropriated CSC cash funds.

Another item approved in the athletic realm is the naming of an area in the Chicoine Center. The Assistant Men’s Basketball Coaches Office is now named in memory of Mack Peyton, a former CSC coach and athletic director, made possible by a gift from alumnus Larry Riley.

Other items approved at the meeting included policy changes that relate to students, including Board Policies 3250 (Student Rights and Responsibilities), 3400 (Tuition Remission), and 3700 (Accommodations of Students with Disabilities).

Chadron State College Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Charles Snare said the revision to Board Policy 3250 further defines a community of learners to include students.

“The addition of this statement conveys a value that distinguishes teaching institutions and assists with setting student expectations,” Snare said.

Board Policy 3700 deals with confidentiality, accommodation process, personal care attendants, service animals, assistance animals, food allergies, and complaints for students. If students have questions about the policy changes, they should contact Deena Kennell.

The Board also received various information items, including reports on online programs, the summer instructional load report, and Quantitative Academic Reports that provide a picture of aspects within each academic area.

At the end of the meeting, each college president and student trustee gave reports. Chancellor Carpenter, who announced his retirement in the fall, gave a report summarizing his 18 years at the System Office. Dr. Paul Turman will become the System Office’s Chancellor Jan. 2, 2019.

The next Board of Trustees’ meeting is scheduled for Jan. 15, 2019, in Lincoln.
