Margetts performs at Cambridge

CHADRON – A relationship forged through Dr. James Margetts’ experience with the Trans-Nebraska Players since 2010 led to a trans-Atlantic music performance opportunity for Margetts during a vacation this summer. The Trans-Nebraska Players is a five-piece chamber ensemble featuring faculty from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Nebraska-Kearney and Chadron State College.
A friend of Margetts’ since 2009, Dr. Noah Rogoff with the University of Nebraska-Kearney music faculty, invited Margetts and the other three Trans-Nebraska Players to join him for a May performance during his sabbatical at Cambridge University in England.
Margetts said it was a tremendous honor to perform at such a celebrated and respected institution. His said his expenses were covered as part of the invitation, mostly by an anonymous benefactor.
Two Trans-Nebraska Players were unable to travel for the confirmed performance dates, so the remaining members adapted.
“We retooled our program and decided to go and represent the ensemble as a trio rather than a quintet,” said Margetts, a former CSC music faculty member who played the piano.
In addition to Margetts and Rogoff, a cellist, the third member of the trio was UNK flute instructor Franziska Brech. They performed two extended works, Franz Josef Haydn’s “Flute Trio in D Major” and Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu’s “Trio in F Major for Flute, Cello, and Piano.”
The concert was part of an ongoing performance series that takes place regularly at two of the colleges that make up the University of Cambridge.
This was Margetts’ first performance in Europe although he has performed in Mexico and Japan and in Canada with the Trans-Nebraska Players.
“My opportunity to join the Trans-Nebraska Players came about because of an introduction made by a friend from graduate school with whom I had performed several recitals in Ohio and who had enjoyed working with me. You just never know when a connection like that will lead to something in the future,” Margetts said.
