Information session about Cuba course set for Feb. 15

The information session, which will cover the travel itinerary, course schedule, financial obligations and the application process, is open to all interested students. Since it is a variable credit course, credit can be applied to a variety of majors and the Essential Studies Program (ESP), including satisfaction of the ESP Capstone requirement, according to Smith. Further, non-degree seeking students can enroll for the one hour course, receive all of the educational material covered in the class and participate in travel to Cuba. 

“Thursday’s informational session is a place where students can ask us any questions about Cuba Libre and gain a comfort level,” Smith said.

Smith, Tucker, and a group of 10 students traveled to Cuba in 2014, marking the first time a group of Nebraska State College System students pursued academic endeavors on the island of Cuba. Smith followed up in 2016 taking 16 students to the island. This trip expanded the educational itinerary of the first trip, adding a trip to the José Fuster art deco neighborhood and attending a performance by the Cuban National Ballet at the newly refurbished Gran Teatro de La Habana.

“Cuba Libre is a high-impact learning practice for our students when things are definitely changing in Cuba. Our students on both trips had their eyes opened and had a great experience,” Smith said. “We feel the educational value of the course is enhanced by the real world experience of seeing the many changes taking place in Cuba and, also, to feel the ebb of daily life that continues despite these changes. This educational experience offers an opportunity for our students to witness a different society and people, which can promote both cultural and intellectual growth.”
