CHADRON – The Fall 2018 Graves Lecture Series begins Tuesday with Dr. Nathaniel Doherty’s presentation, “Equanimity Among the Ruins: The Doubtful Value of Humanity in Colson Whitehead’s ‘Zone One.’” Doherty, a King Library staff member, will talk about “Zone One,” a zombie-apocalypse novel written during the beginning of the 2008 financial crisis and published in 2011.

He will focus on the main character’s dispassionate response to the destruction of human culture by the undead plague, as well as his metaphorical identification of the pre and post-apocalypse worlds.

All Graves Lecture Series presentations are free, open to the public and start at 7 p.m. in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center’s Chicoine Atrium.

On Nov. 13, Dr. Mathew Brust, a professor of Natural Sciences, will present, “Current Conservation Status of Rare Butterflies and Grasshoppers in the Nebraska Panhandle.” Brust will discuss the conservation status of about a dozen rare butterfly species as well as several grasshopper species.

The final lecture of the semester will be Nov. 27 by Markus Jones,an assistant professor of English. He will present “The Shaping of Story,” including a short craft lecture about plot and tension as well as a short story reading. Jones is the author of "How the Butcher Bird Finds Her Voice", published in 2018 by Five Oaks Press. His novel is an award winner in the Multicultural category of the 2018 American Fiction Awards, has been nominated for a 2018 Pushcart Prize, and is a finalist for both the 2017 Tillie Olsen Award and the literary category of the American Fiction Awards.
