CHADRON – Chadron State College’s The Big Event Adviser Dr. Shaunda French-Collins, associate professor of communication, and Graduate Assistant Kelsey Brummels attended the 2018 One Big Thanks Conference at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, Oct. 19-21. The annual conference brings together The Big Event staff and advisers from schools all over the country. This year’s event had 18 schools from Nebraska, New Jersey, Texas, Oklahoma, Virginia and Florida.

During the conference, French-Collins and Brummels took part in multiple breakout sessions, panels, facilitated discussions and a service project. In addition, the duo sat on a technology panel with representatives from Texas A&M University, Stephen F. Austin State University, the University of Central Oklahoma, Rowan University and Virginia Tech. Brummels also partnered with a Rowan University representative to facilitate a budget management discussion.

French-Collins said the conference was a learning experience.

“Going to Stephen F. Austin State University was a great experience. Kelsey and I learned a great deal of information and enjoyed networking with the other schools that host a Big Event,” French-Collins said.

Brummels said she was grateful for the opportunity to attend and bring back ideas to improve CSC’s The Big Event.

“Attending the One Big Thanks Conference was a great opportunity to learn and compare how we conduct our event to other schools’ events,” Brummels said. “The Big Event was already inspiring to me, but seeing the schools assist one another with ideas and concerns showed me just how much bigger the impact of our events truly is.”

Chadron State’s The Big Event will return in April 2019.
