Chadron State College hosted the final meeting of the fiscal year for the Nebraska State College Board of Trustees June 15-16.

Items approved during the meeting included the acceptance of employee salary recommendations, tuition and fee rates for 2017-18 and Board of Trustees’ Policy changes. The Board also voted to name the hospitality center in the renovated football stadium the Verne and Erma Lewellen and Family Hospitality Center. Additionally, the artist and art design for the Rangeland Laboratory and Classroom was accepted.

Policies 3020 and 3650 were updated, and a new policy, 7017, was approved. According to board materials, policy 7017 is intended to provide the overarching policy under which sponsorship agreements are managed system-wide. The policy, however, does not apply to gifts provided to any of the state college’s foundations.

The revision to policy 3020, dealing with sexual violence or sex harassment, clarifies its scope, updates definitions and outlines reporting options available to students who report an alleged policy violation.

The update to policy 3650, dealing with student records, clarifies the circumstances in which the colleges may release non-directory personally identifiable education records without consent in accordance with Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Additionally, operating budgets for all of the state colleges and System Office were approved. Chadron State’s general fund appropriation for 2017-18 is $17,764,514.

The art design created by Krista Birnbaum was approved for the Rangeland Laboratory and Classroom. Birnbaum’s root sculpture will hang in the building as part of Nebraska’s 1% Art initiative. Birnbaum’s proposal was selected through a national search.

Also at the board meeting, Chadron State College was approved to award a Distinguished Service Award. And, the college now has authorization to enter into a contract to obtain nursing services for the Student Health Program.

Prior to the Board of Trustees’ meeting, representatives from each college and the NSCS met for discussion and planning. During a Thursday evening reception and dinner, Chadron State Professor Bruce Hoem was recognized for winning the 2015-16 Teaching Excellence Award.

The next Board of Trustees meeting is scheduled for Sept. 14-15 at Chadron State College.
