CHADRON – Junior Dakota Rice shared first place in bull riding to lead Chadron State College at the Casper College rodeo last weekend.

Both Rice, who is from Kellogg, Idaho, and Jacob Smith of the University of Wyoming scored 80 points in the opening go-round and were the only bull riders to stay aboard until the eight-second horn sounded. After both were thrown during the finals Sunday, they split top honors in the event.

The situation was similar in team roping. The Chadron State duo of Lathan Lauing of Hot Springs, South Dakota, and Lane Day of Bartlett, Nebraska, completed their first run in 7.7 seconds to tie for second and third in the go-round. They missed in the finals, but so did all but one of the remaining top 10 teams, and the CSC cowboys finished in a tie for third and fourth in the overall standings.

Day also reached the finals of tie down roping after finishing his first run in 11 seconds flat to tie for fifth and sixth. He caught his second calf, but had difficulty tying it and his time of 16.1 seconds prevented him from finishing in the top six and earning points.

Another CSC cowboy, Tate Petrak of Martin, South Dakota, was sixth in steer wrestling with times of 5.6 and 6.1 seconds.

Three CSC cowgirls also reached the finals.

Brandi Cwach of Geddes, South Dakota, won the first go-round of goat tying in 6.7 seconds to earn $268.80, but things didn’t go as well on her second run and she did not place in the final standings.

In addition, Dylan Lemmon of Eagle Butte, South Dakota, and Jordan Tierney of Oral, South Dakota, had times of 3.1 and 3.3 seconds, respectively, in the opening go-round of breakaway roping, but neither of them caught their second calf.

The final rodeo of the school year in the Central Rocky Mountain Region will be this weekend at the University of Wyoming. Through the first nine rodeos, three CSC cowboys are the leaders in their events and will qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo at Casper in June.

Prestyn Novak of Newell, South Dakota, is the leader in tie down roping and Cordale Martin of Panhandle, Texas, and Chasen Cole of Hermosa, South Dakota, are first and second, respectively, in bull riding. The top three individuals in each event at the end of the season qualify for nationals.
