Chadron State College senior Nate McFadden of Elsmere, located in Cherry County, has earned points in the bareback riding at all nine rodeos in the Central Rocky Mountain Region this season and is solidly in second place in the standings for the year. He's done particularly well at the last two rodeos, winning first at Colorado State and placing second at Casper College. CHADRON – Led by all-around cowgirl Shelby Winchell and breakaway roping winner Jessie Miller, the Chadron State College women won the team title at the Casper College rodeo this weekend. The CSC cowgirls finished with 385 points, 175 more than runner-up Laramie County Community College at Cheyenne.

Winchell finished second in her top event, goat tying, and was third in breakaway roping to claim her all-around honor.

A graduate student from Scottsbluff, Winchell won the first go-round of goat tying in 8.0 seconds and tied for second and third in the final go-round in 8.1 seconds. She finished in a four-way tie for 10th in the first go-round of breakaway roping in 3.2 seconds, was the runner-up in the finals in 3.6 seconds and placed third overall.

With just one rodeo remaining in the region this year, Winchell has a 550-point lead in the goat tying standings.

Miller, a graduate student from Woodland Park, Colorado, was fifth in the opening go-round of breakaway roping in 2.9 seconds and won the finals go-round in 3.2 seconds for her title.

Miller had not placed at any of the first seven rodeos in the Central Rocky Mountain Region this season until she was the runner-up at Colorado State a week ago. That and her victory this weekend, have vaulted her into third place in the regional standings, just 13 points out of second place.

Two South Dakota cowgirls also earned points for the Chadron State team at Casper. Brandi Cwach of Geddes was fourth in goat tying in 8.1 and 8.4 seconds and Elsie Fortune of Interior was second in the opening go-round of breakaway roping on 2.6 seconds, but missed her second calf.

Bolstered by two CSC cowboys who placed high while earning their first paychecks of the season, the Chadron State men also did well at the Casper rodeo, placing at least once in every event except tie down roping.

The boosts came from Cordale Martin of Panhandle, Texas, who won the bull riding, and Grady Egly of Oelrichs, South Dakota, a member of the second place team roping entry.

Martin had the high score of 76 points in the first round of the bull riding. He was bucked off in the finals, but so were the other contestants, giving him the victory.

Egly transferred to CSC at the start of the second semester and was not eligible to compete until the Casper rodeo. He joined with Coralee Spratt of Gillette College in team roping. They were 10th in the first go-round in 9.5 seconds and second in the finals in 7.6 seconds and the runners-up in the averages.

Also for Chadron State, senior Nate McFadden of Elsmere, Nebraska, placed second in bareback riding. He was second in the first-go round with 67 points and won the finals go-round with 82 points.

McFadden has earned points on barebacks at all nine rodeos in the region this year and is solidly in second place in the standings.

In addition, brothers Colin and Devin Dibbern of Riverdale, Nebraska, were third in team roping in 6.9 and 12.6 seconds. Colin also was third in saddle bronc riding with 67 and 59 points and finished third in the all-around cowboy standings.

In other results at Casper, Colby Anders of Bayard placed sixth in steer wrestling with a pair of 6.5-second runs, Dakota Rice of Kellogg, Idaho, was fifth in bull riding and Lathan Lauing of Hot Springs, South Dakota, and Lane Day of Bartlett, Nebraska, reached the team roping finals with an 8.0-second time, but failed to connect on their second run.

Since Martin, Egly and Colin Dibbern were not among the cowboys on Chadron State’s official team at Casper, the CSC men finished with just 183 points, their lowest of year. However, with only the region’s final rodeo April 29-May 1 at the University of Wyoming remaining on the schedule, Chadron State has a lead of more than 1,000 points in the regional standings to already nail down the team championship.

The top three individuals and top two teams in each event at the end of the season qualify for the National College Finals Rodeo to be in Casper in June.
