ROTC cadets plan for summer training

CHADRON – Cadets enrolled in the Chadron State College Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) are gearing up for summer training, according to 1st Lt. Nate Reicks, assistant professor of military science.

Cadets Logan Luft of Grand Island, Neb., Jerrick Bowers of Gering, Neb., Mackenzie Watson of Mitchell, Neb., Evan Oakley of Strasburg, Colo., and Joshua Mayer of Lincoln, Neb., will be attending required training at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

Through a competitive application process, the following four cadets were selected for additional opportunities. Megan McLean will travel to Thailand in the Cultural Understanding and Language Program (CULP). Bowers also was selected for CULP that will include travel to Nepal. Mayer will job shadow a drill sergeant in Fort Benning. Oakley will attend Cadet Troop Leader Training (CTLT) at Fort Hood with the 1st Cavalry Division.

In other CSC ROTC news, incoming freshman Derek Lothspeich, of Rapid City, South Dakota, will be attending Basic Training and Medic Training.

Graduating senior Kassie VanDiest of Dunning, Nebraska, received her commission during the undergraduate commencement Saturday. She will join the Nebraska Army National Guard as a military police officer in Chadron.

Finally, at the campus ROTC year-end awards ceremony, April 27, Master Sgt. Johnathan Mudget and Lt. Col. Lynna Speier were recognized for their final years serving with the Mount Rushmore Battalion. Mudget will be stationed in Germany with the 25th ACR and Speier is retiring after 22 years of service.
