'No Holds Bard' brings Shakespeare to the Panhandle
CHADRON –The Chadron State College theatre department is bringing Shakespeare to the Panhandle with the production of “No Holds Bard,” a class project for students in TH 339, Children’s Theatre Workshop.
The traveling theatre is combining many of playwright William Shakespeare’s histories, tragedies, comedies and sonnets in a performance suited for elementary and middle schools.
The eleven CSC students participating in the workshop project are responsible for all aspects of staging, costumes, organization and performance. They are Laurin Bronson of Hay Springs, Neb., Nick Enos of Chadron, Wacey Gallegos of Ainsworth, Neb., Natausha Holtz of Sidney, Neb., Samuel Thomas Martin of Hot Springs, S.D., Craig Phillips of Torrington, Wyo., Jessica Steffen-Schepers of Spearfish, S.D., Molly Thornton of Riverton, Wyo., Doug Valade of Scottsbluff, Neb., Syerra Wycoff-Bagshaw of Peyton, Colo. and Nathan Wojciechowski of Minatare, Neb.
In addition to acting and behind the scenes work, the students also created and sent study guides containing information, puzzles and questions related to Shakespeare to each participating school ahead of the performances.
The hour-long performance will include material from “Romeo and Juliet,” “As You Like It,” “The Taming of the Shrew,” and other famous works. Through scenes, sonnets and even sword fights, Roger Mays, professor of visual and performing arts at CSC, believes the traveling workshop will inform the region about classical theatre and important literature.
“The objective of the tour is to bring live theatre, and classic literature to regional public schools,” Mays said. “’No Holds Bard will be highly entertaining and educational.”
The group presented their production to Gordon/Rushville April 7 and Alliance Grandview April 14. Upcoming shows include Crawford and Sioux County April 21 and Chadron Public Schools April 28.
