CHADRON - Devin Hughes, known as the Chief Inspiration Officer, spoke to students about the power of positive thinking in the Chadron State College Student Center Ballroom Feb. 11.

Hughes, an award winning speaker and author of topics on happiness and motivation, spoke to students about belief systems, the power of a positive environment and what his formula is to remaining happy, healthy and successful.

According to Hughes, human beings are a by-product of their own thought process. In effect, if someone is surrounded by negative thoughts and information, his or her thought-process is undoubtedly negative. For Hughes, staying optimistic in these situations is essential.

“We are inundated with negative information. The only good news, is bad news; and, when you are only processing negative thoughts you become a negative person,” Hughes said. “We must celebrate and be happy about life.”

Hughes also discussed the power of a positive environment. He illuminated his point using a story about his elementary grade daughter. Hughes’ daughter explained to him after school one day that her teacher gave everyone in the class permission to tell a classmate “You are awesome” every time their classmates did anything that was deemed to be awesome by that particular person.

“We can only do our best work in a positive environment. Positive thoughts increase success, so we must improve our learning environments. Because if we are not happy and positive, we are not capable of reaching our full potential,” Hughes said.

Hughes final point regarded his recipe for happiness. The formula includes five daily habits of: gratitude; meditation; fifteen minutes of exercise; conscious kind acts; and, reverting back to a positive experience in one’s past so the brain can “re-live” the memory.

Sticking to this daily method, Hughes believes anyone can be happier and more successful.

“Happiness is the key to life. Following my “happiness prescription” will lead you to a happier, more wholesome life,” he said.
