Faculty and staff recognized for years of service
CHADRON – Bruce Hoem, an associate professor in the department of Counseling, Psychological Sciences and Social Work, was named the recipient of the 2016 Chadron State College Teaching Excellence Award Thursday at the annual Faculty and Staff Recognition Luncheon. He received a $1,000 check from the Chadron State Foundation and is a finalist for the Nebraska State College System Teaching Excellence Award.
According to nomination materials, Hoem consistently demonstrates the skills, knowledge and passion associated with exceptional teachers. He has worked with the senior social work class each fall to present a major annual conference since 2009 to examine pertinent and difficult topics ranging from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder to sexual assault.
This year, Hoem’s students reached out to touch the lives of Crest View Care Center residents in a meaningful way by creating “then and now photographs” of the residents and presenting books of events from the years they were born. Hoem’s colleagues hold him in the highest regard and submitted resounding recommendations on behalf of him.
The other two CSC Teaching Excellence nominees were Dr. Lee Miller, associate professor and department chair of English and Humanities, and Dr. Beth Wentworth, professor in the mathematics department.
Miller spearheaded the development of a writing center on campus to assist students with their writing skills in response to a need expressed by his colleagues. With a collegial, optimistic and inquisitive manner, he co-facilitated the faculty learning community in the redesign of the general education program into the Essential Studies Program, according to his nomination materials.
Wentworth is a seasoned and accomplished instructor, especially skilled with the ability to teach students with different learning styles, according to the nomination materials. She is also keenly interested in outreach. As a result of years of Beth’s CSC students mentoring Chadron elementary and middle school students, the public school scores on standardized tests have improved.
Retirees honored at the event included Bonnie Eleson, Frances Gonzalez, Kathy Mason and Jim Moore.
In addition, faculty and staff members who have been at the institution 10 years or longer were recognized for celebrating special anniversaries of employment.
