Cuba Libre approved at June Board of Trustees' meeting
CHADRON – Cuba Libre, a Chadron State College capstone course that travels to the island of Cuba, was approved for the Fall 2016 semester at the most recent meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Nebraska State College System at Hillcrest Country Club in Lincoln, Nebraska, June 10.
Cuba Libre was previously offered in the Fall 2014 semester. The study abroad experience ties in well with the college’s Master Academic Plan, particularly with the Essential Studies Program.
Other items approved during the meeting included the acceptance of employee salary recommendations, Board Policy changes, and granting the Chancellor authority to sign construction and professional services contracts for the CSC stadium project. Additionally, biennium budget requests for 2017-19, which include CSC core needs, mandatory compliance obligations and capital construction of the Math and Science Building, were approved.
Some of the notable Board Policy changes occurred to policies 5015, 3300 and 3050. Board Policy 5015 deals with adjunct faculty and the update included a system-wide rate for compensation set at $835 per credit taught. Beginning in the Fall 2013, CSC began paying adjuncts $835 per credit. Now, with the policy change, Wayne State and Peru State pay the same amount as CSC.
The changes to Board Policies 3300 and 3050 both deal with student affairs. In Board Policy 3300, benefits and requirements for student organizations were clarified, misconduct was defined and procedures were established for investigation and discipline. The change to Board Policy 3050 now defines those as serving in the Nebraska National Guard as Nebraska residents for tuition purposes.
Also, MBS Direct, an online book and course material provider, was approved as Chadron State College’s bookstore. CSC’s current bookstore contract with Follett will end June 30. In addition to MBS Direct’s services, Reeves Incorporated of Chadron will operate a retail outlet in the Student Center.
Prior to the Board of Trustees’ meeting, representatives from each college and the NSCS met for discussion and planning. The college and system office representatives comprise three councils – Business Officers, Academic Officers and Student Affairs, Marketing and Enrollment Officers – that report to the Board.
The next Board of Trustees meeting is scheduled for Sept. 8-9 at Wayne State College.
