CSC students present at Nebraska TRiO Day conference

CHADRON – Six students from Chadron State College’ Project Strive/TRiO attended a National TRiO Day workshop hosted by the University of Nebraska-Kearney’s Student Support Services Saturday.

“This was a great opportunity for our students to share their college experiences and also give back to the TRiO program. The four students who presented enjoyed sharing with their peers and those in other TRiO programs, plus it was a great way to network,” said Jennifer Schaer, Project Strive/TRiO director.

CSC student Nigel Jones of Poway, California, and Project Strive/TRiO counselor Sonja Dressel presented “Navigating Social Media in Higher Education,” offering high school students a list of dos and don’ts as they transition to college. The presentation included etiquette across a variety of media platforms and they encouraged students to be proactive in cultivating a professional online presence.

Students Sara Tompkins of Chadron, Courtney Pendleton of Geneva, Nebraska, and Kishawn Tualaulelei of Kailua Kona, Hawaii, presented about various aspects of college life.

Tompkins spoke on how Upward Bound changed her life. She said the program helped her build leadership skills, and develop from shy to confident and smart to intelligent in her presentation, “Upward Bound: College Preparation.”

In her presentation, “Finding Your Niche,” Pendleton shared how she dealt with personal issues and suggestions about how others can become successful in college.

Tualaulelei reviewed her journey of leaving Hawaii to enroll at Chadron State College in “Overcoming the Fear of Leaving Home.”  She explained how CSC friends, family and the TRiO program helped her overcome the obstacles of homesickness and feeling out of her comfort zone.

Other student presentations covered budgeting, time management, leadership, choosing a major, scholarship essay writing, a student-athlete panel and a poetry reading.
