CHADRON – The Chadron State College Campus Arboretum Volunteers will meet for the first workday of 2016 on Saturday, March 12 at 9 a.m. at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center.

Kaitlyn Steinwart, a December 2015 CSC graduate and horticultural groundskeeper, will be directing the day’s activities which will include demonstrations of proper pruning techniques and recommended methods of sharpening tools such as shovels and pruning shears.

“I hope the weather allows us to work outside and provide an opportunity for the volunteers to unleash their newly learned skills,” Steinwart said. “It’s very freeing to have somebody right there for guidance and advice when you make the cut because it is possible to compromise the health and longevity of the tree or plant you are working on.”

In case of inclement conditions, volunteers will meet in the Sandoz Center to sort, package and label seeds gathered from campus. The seed packets will be available in the Sandoz gift store.

Students and community members of all ages, including families, are welcome and all volunteers should wear work clothes appropriate for seasonal weather conditions and bring work gloves, Steinwart said.

The workday will conclude promptly at noon.
