CSC announces new faculty and staff

CHADRON – Nine new Chadron State College employees will join the faculty ranks this semester. They are Dr. David Christensen, Trudy Denham, Nathaniel Doherty, Dr. Gary Dusek, Dr. Aaron Field, Dr. Peter Moriasi, John Staben, Dr. Jeremy Weremeichik and Dr. Tara Wilson. Two faculty members, Chris McCarthy and Brittany Helmbrecht, are returning in new capacities.

School of Business, Entrepreneurship, Applied, and Mathematical Sciences and Sciences

Dusek will teach marketing, management and sales courses. Dusek, an assistant professor, comes to CSC with experience in international research. He earned his Doctor of Business Administration with an International Business Concentration from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He said he was impressed with CSC’s small classes that will allow him to get to know students better and allow for better discussions.

Field, who earned his doctorate at North Dakota State University, will be an assistant professor teaching Rangeland Ecology courses dealing with plant science and wildlife and livestock habitat in the Applied Sciences department. Field said the opportunity to use range teaching resources on campus, plus the strong community support of the program and focus on student learning, were some factors that attracted him to the position.

McCarthy will be an assistant professor in the business department teaching Survey of Economics, Principles of Macroeconomics and Principles of Microeconomics. He earned his master’s in economics from Colorado State University in 2013 and is currently working on the final stages of his doctoral dissertation. He joined CSC in January 2016 and said the friendliness and peacefulness of Chadron appeals to him.

Staben has two master’s degrees, one in economics from the University of Missouri and one in technology management from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. He will be teaching mathematics courses.

Weremeichik is an assistant professor teaching geoscience and geology courses. He will teach physics, rocks and minerals and astronomy. He earned his Ph.D. in Earth and Atmospheric Science from Mississippi State earlier this year. He said he was drawn to CSC by its location and the community and institution’s dedication to educational excellence.

School of Education, Social Work, Human Performance and Psychology

Helmbrecht is a returning instructor in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation department, after teaching the previous year in a one-year appointment. She will be responsible for teaching Personal Health and Wellness, fitness activities, team sport activities and a Capstone topics course named Sports Reporters. She graduated from Central Michigan University with her bachelor’s and the University of Nebraska-Kearney with her master’s. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D.

New to the education faculty, Moriasi came from Kenya to New Jersey where he earned his master’s in special education. He went on to the University of Oklahoma to earn his doctorate in sociology. Moriasi, an assistant professor, will be teaching special education courses. Following his interview in Chadron, he said he liked the college even more than he had initially based on the position description.

Originally from Hay Springs, Wilson, is returning to campus as a member of the counseling faculty after earning her master’s in community counseling from CSC and her doctorate from the University of Wyoming in Counselor Education and Supervision. Wilson, an associate professor, will be responsible for career counseling courses and school counseling and mental health counseling internships.

School of Liberal Arts

Christensen joins the Social Science department as an assistant professor. He will teach U.S. history and environmental history. An Alliance native, Christensen earned his master’s from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and his doctorate from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.

Denham, who has two master’s degrees from the University of Missouri: in education and in fine arts with an emphasis in studio art, joins the art faculty as an assistant professor. She will teach ceramics, drawing, and art for the elementary/middle school teacher. Denham said she was impressed by CSC’s size, location and its focus on students and their learning.

Doherty will be an instructor in English and the Humanities teaching transitional writing. Originally from Connecticut, he earned the first of two master’s degrees in Ireland. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in literature from Stony Brook University. He said he and his wife, Kimberly Cox, an assistant professor in the English department, enjoy life in the community of Chadron and the opportunities for teaching and research.

Five other employees were recently hired. They are Eli Smith, Custodian, Jacqueline "Jackie" Buhr, Financial Aid Counselor, Robin Bila, Licensed Student Counselor, Connie Kittell, Project Coordinator, and Leah Reed, Project Coordinator.

Additionally, six CSC employees received title changes. They are John Ritzen, Instructor and women’s golf coach, Dave Nesheim, Interim Director-Assessment, Pamela Newberg, Interim Director-Library Learning Commons, Chris Green, Assistant Athletic Director, Sam Ballard, Interim Director-Teaching and Learning Center, Nick Yardley, Maintenance Repair Worker II.
