Chadron State men win first, CSC women third at college's rodeo
CHADRON—The Chadron State men were first and the women third in the team standings during the college’s rodeo this past weekend at the Dawes County Fairgrounds. The rodeo was the first in the Central Rocky Mountain Region this school year.
The CSC men scored 530 points to win their championship. Sheridan College was second with 510 and the University of Wyoming third with 260.
Casper College won the girls’ team title with 245 points. Sheridan College was the runner-up with 205 and CSC third with 196.67.
Ten CSC entries placed among the top six in their events, led by seniors Elsie Fortune of Interior, South Dakota, who was the breakaway roping winner, and Cordale Martin of Panhandle, Texas, the bull riding champion.
Both Prestyn Novak of Newell, South Dakota, and Lane Day of Bartlett, Nebraska, placed in two events. Novak finished third in steer wrestling and was sixth in tie down roping, while Day was third in tie down roping and sixth in steer wrestling. They also were second and third, respectively, in the all-around cowboy standings. The all-around winner was JD Kirwin of Gillette College.
Others placing for CSC were Chasen Cole of Hermosa, S.D., third in bull riding; Sam Bolden of Oglala, S.D., fifth in team roping heeling; Cole Retchless of Bridgeport, Neb., fifth in steer wrestling; and Brandi Cwach of Geddes, S.D., sixth in goat tying.
Five other CSC contestants also placed among the top 10 in their events in the first go-round, allowing them to reach the championship go-round Sunday.
The other event winners besides Fortune and Martin were Hunter Carlson of Sheridan College, bareback riding; Tayte Clark of Sheridan College, saddle bronc riding; Ty Spickelmier of Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo., tie down roping; Gage Greer of Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, steer wrestling; Braden Pirrung of Eastern Wyoming College and Kirwin, team roping; Morgan Link of Sheridan College, barrel racing; and Rickie Engesser of Gillette College, goat tying.
Megan Turek of LCCC was the all-around cowgirl.
The next rodeo in the Central Rocky Mountain Region will be this weekend, Sept. 23-25, at Sheridan College.
