Bull rider leads CSC entries at rodeo in Cheyenne

Rice won the bull riding by scoring 79 points in the first go-round, when he was one of just three contestants to make the eight-second whistle. All three were bucked off in the finals, but Rice’s score was the highest by seven points and he was the event winner.

Other CSC cowboys placing in the final standings included Sam Bolden and his partner Casey Sellers of Gillette College, who were third among the 80 team roping entries with times of 7.9 and 7.5 seconds, and Lane Day, who placed fifth in steer wrestling in 6.3 and 4.9 seconds.

Two more Chadron State entries, both graduates of Hot Springs High School, had excellent runs in the first go-round of their events, but didn’t fare as well in the finals.

Jordan Tierney had the fastest time of 7.2 seconds in the opening go-round of goat tying. Things didn’t go as smoothly in the finals when her time was 8.7, and she was sixth overall. In addition, Lathan Lauing was the runner-up in the first go-round of tie down roping in 10 seconds flat, but missed his second calf and was fifth in the final standings.

Three more CSC entries also were among the 10 finalists in their events, but didn’t place in the top six overall. They are Lauing and Day in team roping, Cody Trump in saddle bronc riding and Tate Petrak in steer wrestling.

The rodeo in Cheyenne was the fifth and final one of the fall season in the Central Rocky Mountain Region.

The CSC cowboys finished the first half of the schedule second in the team standings with 1,628 points, and several of the team members are among the event leaders.

Bull riders Chasen Cole and Cordale Martin are one-two in bull riding with 430 and 350 points, respectively. Bolstered by his win this past weekend, Rice is sixth with 160 points.

Prestyn Novak has the lead in tie down roping with 395 points, 135 ahead of the runner-up. Day is fifth with 210 points.

The Chadron State women’s team is fifth in those standings, just 163 points out of third place. Elsie Fortune is third in breakaway roping and Tierney and Brandi Cwach are sixth and eighth, respectively, in goat tying.
