Bull rider leads CSC entries at Lamar rodeo

CHADRON – Chasen Cole won the bull riding for the second weekend in a row and Brandi Cwach was runner-up in the all-around cowgirl standings to lead Chadron State College entries at the Lamar College rodeo this past weekend.

Cole scored 71 points to place second in the first go-round and then rang up 81 points in the final go-round Sunday, when he was the only bull rider to stay aboard until the eight-second whistle sounded.

Through three Central Rocky Mountain Region rodeos this fall, Cole has ridden five of the six bulls he’s drawn to accumulate 410 points. That’s 150 more than teammate Cordale Martin has earned to rank second in the regional standings.

Martin won the bull riding at the CSC rodeo to open season and was second to Cole at the Sheridan College rodeo, but he did not score at Lamar.

Cwach was a finalist in three events while ranking second in the all-around cowgirl standings. She was second in goat tying in 7.9 and 7.7 seconds, just a half second behind the winner, placed fifth in breakaway roping in 3.4 and 12.5 seconds and reached the championship go-round in team roping.

Chadron State’s Prestyn Novak and his partner, Colby Hetzel of Sheridan College, were second in team roping with runs of 7.7 and 6.9 seconds. The latter mark was the fastest in the finals go-round and their total time of 13.7 seconds was just a tenth of a second behind the winning duo.

Another CSC cowboy, Sam Bolden, finished fourth in tie down roping with runs of 11.3 and 10.0 seconds. The latter time was the second fastest during the finals.

While Elsie Fortune did not place in the top six of the breakaway roping standings because she missed her second calf, her time of 2.9 seconds put her in a three-way tie for first place in the opening go-round.

Fortune and CSC cowboy Lance Neuerburg also were among the 10 teams to reach the team roping finals. They did not make connections in the finals.

All of the Chadron State entries who placed at Lamar are from South Dakota. Cole is from Hermosa, Cwach’s hometown is Geddes, Novak is from Newell and Bolden is from Oglala. Also, Fortune’s address is Interior.

This weekend’s rodeo in the Central Rocky Mountain Region will be at Central Wyoming College in Riverton.
