CHADRON—The Chadron State College community and the public are invited to a reception in Memorial Hall Thursday from 2 to 4:30 p.m. for artist Alison Harris, whose drawings are on display in Memorial Hall’s Gallery 239.

Harris, who teaches art at Colorado Mesa University, primarily works with drawing. Her pieces are motivated through her own observations, then she deconstructs and reconstructs the image on paper.

She said she focuses on the uniqueness of individuals and expressing this presence through her drawing. She uses physical traits to reveal a subject’s psychological, emotional and spiritual presence.

Harris employs these ideas in her own classroom, as well as focusing on students’ skill development and problem solving.

The critique and the discovery that accompanies the learning environment of a college classroom, is essential to an artist’s discovery, she said.

“Art making is a process of discovery,” said Harris. “Critiques are important in this setting because they give students exposure to each other’s work and the endless variation among individuals.”

The show is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays through March 30.
