Two students place at Phi Beta Lambda nationals
Six Chadron State College students represented the institution at the national Phi Beta Lambda conference and competition in Chicago June 24-27. They are Stephanie Alfred of Mitchell, Neb., Troy Fields of Halsey, Neb., Kaylee Gaswick of Chadron, Shayna Johnson of Laurel, Neb., Drew Kasch of Highlands Ranch, Colo. and Molly O’Connell of Belle Fourche, S.D.
Kasch and Fields placed fourth in Integrated Marketing Campaign with an entry focused on marketing and promotional materials for a fish taco truck in Denver.
Kasch took eighth place in the Job Interview competition. This was one of the most competitive events at the conference, according to CSC business faculty member Todd Jamison who accompanied the group.
“I just moved into the role of PBL adviser following Chris Tingley, so I can’t really take any credit for their success. I primarily drove and cheered them on at their competition. It was a great time,” Jamison said.
To meet travel expenses to Chicago, PBL club members conducted fundraising activities in Chadron and their hometowns after qualifying for nationals at the Nebraska competition in early April.
PBL is a collegiate level organization affiliated with the high school level organization Future Business Leaders of America. Together, the two branches of the business education association have 250,000 members nationwide.
“This was our first year in PBL after a long hiatus. It is incredible to see that level of competition for the first year of the club. We’re working on increasing the level of club membership, not only with more business students, but with students from across the campus. Our goal is to have an even better year next year,” Jamison said.
Six CSC students qualified for PBL nationals in 2010, 13 in 2007 and four in 2004. Kim Dickmeyer, a transfer student from Mid-Plains Community College, placed first in Insurance Operations in 2001 and 2002.
