Jessica Stodola of Clarkson, Nebraska, won the Region 5 William N. Wasson award at the National Intramural Recreation and Sport Association (NIRSA) annual conference and recreational Sports Expo March 30-April 2 in Dallas, Texas.

The award, named after NIRSA’s founder, recognizes top students employed in college recreational departments.

“I value this award because I have dedicated a lot of time and effort into campus recreation and academic excellence throughout my college career at Chadron State. Being recognized for hard work and personal achievement at the NIRSA Conference was an unforgettable and gratifying experience,” Stodola said.

Chris Green, Nelson Physical Activity Center director, and graduate assistant Kristen Lucero of Alamosa, Colorado, also attended the conference. Green won the Wasson award as a graduate student at University of Northern Colorado in 2011.

Green said he is proud to have Stodola representing CSC and believes she is the first winner of the award from CSC.

“This award is intended to honor students who are both academically strong and great leaders on their respective campuses through campus recreation, so Jessica is an ideal recipient,” Green said.

She helped Green with planning the group fitness program “Eagle Fit” throughout the spring and summer of 2014. She then initiated the program in fall 2014 and continues to oversee it this semester.

Stodola, who has a 3.87 grade-point average, is involved in the Cheer Team, Cardinal Key National Honor Society and Chadron Community Special Olympic Athletics. She also instructs gymnastics lessons for over 50 area children.

She will graduate in May with her bachelor’s degree and has been accepted at the University of Central Florida in Orlando where she will be pursuing a master’s degree in exercise physiology.
