CHADRON – Outstanding Chadron State College August 2014, December 2014 and May 2015 graduates were honored Friday at Ivy Day, a CSC ceremony which dates back to 1920.

Ivy Day royalty, elected by the student body, were crowned at the event hosted by the Blue Key and Cardinal Key national honor societies.

Cheyenne Deering of Wasta, South Dakota, was voted Ivy Day queen, with Erika Roybal of Denver, Colo., second attendant, Sarah DeKay of Chambers, Neb., third attendant, Kristine Bond of Lodgepole, Neb., fourth attendant and Chelsea Owen of Valentine, Neb. fifth attendant.

Daniel Regier of Imperial, Neb., was voted Ivy Day king, with Jacob Brunette of Pinedale, Wyo., and Jacob Murphy of Harrison, Neb., tied for second attendant, Alex Coon of Bayard, Neb., fourth attendant and David Vilmar Jr. of Abaco, Bahamas, fifth attendant.

The Platinum Eagle, awarded annually to one female and one male student, went to Justy Bullington of Chadron and Jacob Rissler of Gillette, Wyo. The recipients were selected by a student-faculty committee based on their distinguished leadership, outstanding campus involvement and service. The award is considered the highest honor a Chadron State student can receive.

Other Platinum Eagle finalists included Diane Baluska of Kimball, Neb., Deering, Kelsey Empfield of Scottsbluff, Neb., Owen, Brunette, Coon, Channing Jons of Newcastle, Wyo., Murphy and Regier.

Dr. Brad Wilburn, professor of English and Humanities, delivered the faculty greeting. He encouraged the graduates to maintain the same attitude of engagement they have displayed while at CSC.

Student orators Jake Rissler and Cheyenne Deering also addressed the audience. Rissler encouraged his fellow classmates to do what they can, with what they have, where they are, referring to a Theodore Roosevelt quote.

“We all have to overcome obstacles,” he said.

Deering reiterated the many reasons she has stayed at CSC including trips to Omaha and Minneapolis, faculty remembering her name and caring about her success and her future.

“I came to a small campus because of a scholarship, but I had a big experience,” she said.

Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude honor graduates were recognized and are noted in the online graduation list. The event also featured the following departmental awards.
