Music department gears up to host annual High Plains festival

CHADRON – Nearly 125 student musicians from 25 Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming high schools will travel to Chadron State College for the annual High Plains Band and Choir Festival in Memorial Hall Feb. 2-3. The Honor Band Director is Dr. Joseph Manfredo of Illinois State University. He is the coordinator of undergraduate music education and student teaching for the School of Music. Originally from Calumet City, Illinois, Manfredo earned an undergraduate degree and a graduate degree in conducting from Eastern Illinois University. His doctorate in Music Education is from the University of Illinois.

According to his bio on the college’s website, Manfredo is in demand as a guest conductor, clinician, consultant and adjudicator. He has conducted various All-State bands and honor bands throughout the mid-west. In addition, he has presented lectures and clinics at the Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Clinic and the Music Educators National Conference & College Band Directors National Conference.

He has made numerous international presentations in China, Germany, Luxembourg, Austria and Brazil.  He has been published by Music Educators Journal, Journal for Music Teacher Education, Journal for Band Research, The Instrumentalist and the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education.

CSC faculty member Dr. Joel Schreuder is the Honor Choir director.

In addition to the honor band ensemble and honor choir ensemble, the festival will feature clinics for high school directors, a display by Hill Music from Casper, Wyoming, music reading sessions for directors, dance for High Plains student participants Monday evening.

The final concert, Tuesday, Feb. 3, in the Memorial Hall Auditorium from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., is free and open to the public.
