CHADRON – Chadron State College students in Museum Studies 331, Exhibit Design, hosted a reception Tuesday, Dec. 8, in the Main Gallery of Memorial Hall. The reception was a chance for the students to show their end of semester exhibit projects and to interact with the public.

For their projects, the students were assigned different broad areas. The exhibits included McKeen Motor Car Company, Lakota and Arapaho captives of the American West, weapons of the plains, medicinal plants of the Lakota, mule deer and the city of Cheyenne, Wyoming.

MacKenzie Carroll of Elk Grove, California, said her topic was historical preservation. From that, she discovered a McKeen rail car had been fully restored to working condition in 2012 and decided to do her exhibit on the McKeen Motor Car Company.

Christian Ahlers of Bayard, Nebraska, said he chose his topic because he wanted to shine a light on difficulties Native Americans face.

The exhibits, which required research consisting of interviews and reading historical documents, took the students a day to install. All of the exhibits had elements of print media, while a few featured other media, including artifacts, digital and interactive elements.

Museum Studies is taught by Sarah Polak, museum director of the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center.
