The juvenile book collection in the Reta King Library at Chadron State College has increased by 160 titles thanks to a generous donation.

Pam Newberg, technical services librarian at the Library Learning Commons, said her partner, Beth Johnson, made the donation in honor of her older sister, Cathy Hall, who taught in suburban Chicago schools for 37 years. Hall died Sept. 17.

Johnson was a foster grandparent at the Child Development Center from 2011-2014 and remains actively involved with the CSC campus community.

As the liaison for the English, education and music departments, Newberg knew that Dr. Elisabeth Ellington was interested in the library acquiring additional books for youth.

Some of the library’s non-fiction books are outdated and need to be retired, according to Newberg.

“This contribution will grow the collection and expose education students and student teachers to many award-winners endorsed by the American Library Association and the National Council of Teachers of English. These are cream of the crop books that will continue Cathy’s legacy of mentoring future educators,” Newberg said.

The new books, ranging from pre-school to high school level, will circulate serving CSC education students and student teachers. Each book will bear a bookplate noting that it was donated in memory of Cathy Hall.
