Lock down has been canceled - Updated 2:30 a.m. (Jan. 25, 2015)

The lock down for the residence halls on the Chadron State College campus has been canceled as of 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning, Jan. 25, 2015. Based on information from the Chadron Police Department, there is no threat to campus.

“The safety and security of our students is our No. 1 priority,” Chadron State College Vice President for Enrollment Management, Marketing and Student Services Jon Hansen said. “We appreciate the cooperation and patience that our students, campus visitors and staff demonstrated throughout this situation.”

The search for a male armed with a firearm was ended after a six-hour search, according to a press release issued by the Chadron Police Department.

Early Sunday morning, Chadron police called off its search for a male armed with a firearm after more than six hours of investigation and a thorough search of the Hidden Valley area by foot, including the use of a K-9 tracking dog from the Nebraska State Patrol.

“Law enforcement officers from several agencies conducted a thorough search of this area and after interviewing the 16-year-old male several times; we are now confident that he was the only occupant of the vehicle in the Hidden Valley area,” Chadron Police Chief Tim Lordino said.

According to the press release, the Chadron police arrested a 16-year-old juvenile male for the following: Terroristic Threats, a class IV felony, Theft by unlawful taking, a class III felony, Unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, a class III misdemeanor, False reporting, a class I misdemeanor, DUI and refusal of a chemical test. 

The 16-year-old juvenile male will be transported to the juvenile detention center in Gering. Chadron Police Department was assisted by the Dawes County Attorney's Office, the Nebraska State Patrol, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, the Rapid City Police Department, the Pine Ridge Police Department and the Dawes County Sheriff’s Department.

The following is a press release from the Chadron Police Department, received by Chadron State College shortly after midnight Jan 25, 2015.

Around 2000 hours this evening, Chadron police officers had contact with a stolen motor vehicle on Hidden Valley Road, which is located on the south side of Chadron's city limits. Officers arrested a 16 year old juvenile male who was located with the stolen vehicle. The Chadron Police Department is currently looking for a 19 year old Native American male, wearing a black sweat shirt, black pants and black shoes and is possibly armed with a firearm. The last known direction of travel is reported to be North from Hidden Valley Road. 

The Chadron Police Department is asking for the public's assistance in locating this subject. If you see a person matching this description, do not approach the subject; call 911.  

The Chadron Police Department is currently searching for the subject and is being assisted by other local law enforcement agencies.

Campus dorms locked down - 10:13 p.m. (Jan. 24, 2015)

As of Saturday at 9:30 p.m., the Chadron State College residence halls are locked down. An individual alleged to be armed and potentially dangerous was last seen moving on foot near Hidden Valley, south of the campus. The alleged individual, who was moving north near the campus, is described as a 17-year old Native American wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.

If the alleged individual is seen, please call 911 (9-911 on campus phones) or the Chadron Police Department at 308-432-0510.

All students who live on campus must remain in their residence halls. Chadron State students who live in the residence halls will be allowed admittance into their rooms with positive identification. All employees who are on campus should also seek shelter.

All persons not currently in a building are directed to leave campus grounds. If you are currently away from campus do not return.
