CHADRON – When the late Mary Roland Holmgren earned her teaching certificate from Chadron Normal School in 1918 little did she know that she was setting in motion a tradition that would result in four generations of her descendants attending the institution.

She and her husband Albert Holmgren had five children: Alberta Richmond, Arline Schaefer, Mary Ann Modlin Baack, Jane Publow and Pat Holmgren, whose families all have ties to CSC.

Alberta Richmond Family

Holmgren’s oldest daughter, Alberta, who died in 2013, attended in 1941 after graduating from Sioux County High School. She and her husband, George Richmond, had four children: JoAnn, Lee, Jeanne and David.

Arline Schaefer Family

Arline earned her bachelor’s degree in 1971. She and her husband, Charles Schaefer, had four children: Robert (deceased), Joe, Mary, Marjorie and John.

Joe earned two degrees from CSC, an education bachelor’s in 1977 and a justice studies bachelor’s in 1997. He is an attorney and mediator in Omaha, Nebraska. He and his wife, Patricia, have three daughters: Jennifer, Jessica and Jaclyn.

Arline’s daughter, Mary, earned her undergraduate degree in 1974. She is married to Tom Willnerd, who earned two degrees from CSC, one in 1973 and one in 1975. They live in Spearfish, South Dakota, and have three children: Shawn, Melissa and Nicole.

Mary Ann Modlin Baack Family

The third Holmgren sibling, Mary Ann Modlin Baack, graduated from Sioux County High School and earned an elementary education degree in 1970. She died earlier this year. Her children include Cheryl Bill, Julie Gehrig, Laura Baack and Kemp Modlin (deceased).

Julie Gehrig’s husband, Don, attended CSC 1973 to 1975 studying pre-mortuary. He went on to professional school and spent his career as a mortician and retired four years ago. The couple lives in Sidney, Nebraska, Don’s hometown. Their daughters are Jennifer Doyle and Amy McManigal.

The Gehrig’s daughter, Jennifer, graduated from CSC with a business/marketing degree in 2000 and married Scott Doyle, who earned a mathematics degree in 1999. He also played football and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. They live in Casper where Scott owns and operates Doyle Surveying Inc. Jennifer describes herself as a domestic engineer. Their children are DeLane and Brodie.

Jennifer’s sister, Amy, attended CSC from 1997 to 1999 and went on to earn her teaching degree. She is a second-grade teacher in Kimball, Nebraska. She and her husband, Cory McManigal, have two children, Toby and Tyler. Cory earned a human service management degree with a minor in criminal justice, while also wrestling for CSC. He is a substance abuse counselor at Destiny Counseling Services LLC in Sidney

Jane Publow Family

Jane Publow, the fourth Holmgren child, married Alvin Publow. They had two sons, Terry and Danny, who attended CSC, and a daughter, Nancy. Terry earned a bachelor’s degree in 1975. He was president of the Health Sciences Club and a member of Chi Alpha. He and his wife, Roxanne, live in Joplin, Missouri. Terry is a physical therapist and Roxanne, also a 1975 CSC graduate, is a teacher. Their sons are Nathan and Brian.

Danny earned two CSC degrees, a bachelor’s in business education in 1977 and a master’s in business education in 1990. He was a member of Blue Key Honor Fraternity and a member of the CSC track team. After teaching and coaching for 30 years, he retired in 2010. He currently owns and operates an H&R Block franchise. He and his wife Darlene have two children, Jenny Beel and Keri Nadolski.

Jenny earned an elementary education degree in 2001 and taught first grade in Valentine for five years before becoming a stay-at-home mother with she and her husband, Adam’s, children, Olivia and Eli.

Pat Holmgren Family

Although the fifth child of Mary Holmgren, the late Pat Holmgren and his wife Patricia did not attend CSC, some of their descendants have.

Pat and Patricia’s son, Chuck, received his degree in 1973. He and his wife, Donna, ranch near Harrison. They have three children with CSC connections.

Sara Paxton studied pre-pharmacy and then transferred in 1999. She is a pharmacist at O’Neill Avera St. Anthony’s Hospital in O’Neill, Nebraska, where she lives with her husband Darby and sons, Will and Ben.

Kristie Norman graduated in 2003 with a degree in recreation/fitness and exercise. She was active on the Campus Activities Board, Phi Beta Lambda, Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship and in intramural sports. She is employed by Lincoln Capital, LLC and is married to Judd Norman.

Sam Holmgren earned his bachelor’s degree in 2009 and ranches near Crawford.

Chuck’s brother, Casey, graduated in 1981 with an earth science degree. He and his wife, Amy, live in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he is president of Horizon Energy Company.
