CHADRON – The Chadron State College Vocal Jazz Ensemble will perform at the Nebraska Music Educator’s Association (NMEA) Convention Nov. 20, in Lincoln, Nebraska. The CSC ensemble was one of 12 groups selected from 37 applicants by a committee of NMEA board members to perform during the three-day convention.

Senior Lane Swedberg, of North Platte, Nebraska, said it is an honor to perform.

“We are one of the only vocal jazz choirs in the state so we are excited to showcase our talents and show our audience how awesome vocal jazz can be,” he said.  “We are a little bit nervous because we have to be concert ready a lot quicker than in year’s past, but so far things are moving along smoothly.”

Senior Zach Henderson, of Douglas, Wyoming, said he is excited to sing in front ofmusic educators and some high school students.

“Not only will we be able to have a great performance in an amazing venue, but we will also be putting Chadron in the minds of teachers from around the state as a college that is serious about vocal jazz. Our hope in this is to recruit new students from the eastern side of the state to grow our music program and our ensembles,” Henderson said.

In addition to Swedberg and Henderson, the Vocal Jazz Ensemble is comprised of Zach Banzhaf of Chadron, Neb., Emily Helsel of Brighton, Colo., Leslie Hopton and Forrest Holso of Sundance, Wyo. Jessica Hurd of Gordon, Neb., Celina Leman of Douglas, Wyo., Jacob Wirth of Sidney, Neb., Nicholas Brooks and Tanner Johns of Alliance, Neb., Drew Kasch of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Jedd Raymond of Ainsworth, Neb., and Curtis Stevens of Ogallala, Neb.

Chadron State’s faculty is also well represented. Dr. Sandy Schaefer is assisting on the drum set while Dr. Sid Shuler and Robert Pace are assisting. The Vocal Jazz Ensemble is under the direction of Dr. Joel Schreuder.

The Vocal Jazz Ensemble is the second CSC musical group selected to perform at this convention. The Concert Choir sang for the 2012 NMEA convention.
