CSC grad receives state award

MITCHELL, Neb. – Heath Peters, who earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Chadron State College, was recently chosen Nebraska’s Middle School Principal of the Year. He has been the principal of both the senior high and the middle school at Mitchell the past nine years.
The award will be presented to Peters during Administrators Days in Kearney in August. He also is under consideration for the National Principal of the Year Award. That honor will be announced during a convention in Washington, D.C., in September.
A native of Bridgeport, Peters received his Bachelor of Science degree with a major in K-12 physical education in 1995 and earned a Master of Science degree with emphasis in principal/secondary education in 2006.
His wife, the former Michelle Vergil, also grew up in Bridgeport and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Chadron State in 1995. The couple have two daughters.
Katherine Urbanek, the Mitchell superintendent of schools, said Peters is always well prepared and conducts himself in a calm, directed and organized manner. She said he has developed positive relationships with the students and their parents, and focuses on helping prepare students for life-long success. —Con Marshall
