CSC cowboys win team title at first spring rodeo

GILLETTE, Wyo. – Led by three cowboys in timed events and a couple of bareback riders, the Chadron State College men won the team championship at the Gillette College rodeo over the weekend.

The rodeo was the first of the spring in the Central Rocky Mountain Region. The Chadron State men’s team is now second in the regional standings with 2,250 points, only 65 behind Gillette. Casper College is third with 2,140 points.

The CSC leaders included Lane Day of Bartlett, Neb., who won the tie down roping; Prestyn Novak of Newell, S.D., who was second in that event; and Taz Olson of Prairie City, S.D., the steer wrestling winner.

Day roped and tied his calves in 11.0 and 11.4 seconds while placing third in the first go-round and second in the finals on Sunday to win top honors in the event.

Novak shared seventh place in the first go-round in 11.8 seconds and completed his second run in 11.2 seconds win the go-round and finish second overall.

Olson had the second fastest time of 6.1 seconds in the opening go-round of steer wrestling and flipped his second steer in 5.9 seconds to win the finals go-round and the averages.

CSC entries placed second and third in bareback riding. Wyatt Clark of Wellfleet was the runner-up after tying for first in the opening go-round with 75 points and sharing third place in the finals with a 68 score. Nate McFadden of Dunning was third with scored of 69 and 68 points. He also won or shared third place in both go-rounds.

Jeff Cover of Ashby also added a few points to the men’s team score by placing sixth in saddle bronc riding.

The Chadron State cowboys also won the team championship at their own rodeo last fall.

Three Chadron State cowgirls finished fifth in events at Gillette.

Amy Deichert of Spearfish, S.D., was fifth in barrel racing in 14.26 and 14.56 seconds. Her time won the first go-round. Deichert also wound up seventh in goat tying in 8.2 and 8.6 seconds.

Brandi Cwach of Geddes, S.D., was fifth in goat tying in 8.1 and 8.5 seconds and Kodi McFadden of Elsmere, Neb., tied for fifth in breakaway roping in 3.3 and 3.4 seconds. Cwach also was among the 10 finalists in the barrel race.

Colorado State University at Fort Collins will host this weekend’s rodeo in the region.
