Clark rides three barebacks, but doesn't make finals

Chadron State College cowboy Wyatt Clark rode all three of his barebacks at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper last week, but he didn’t draw the kind that allowed him to rank high in the standings.

Clark scored 69, 65.5 and 68.5 points for a total of 203. It took at least 211.5 points on three rides to be among the 12 finalists.

The winner, Tim O’Connell of Missouri Valley College, scored at least 82 points on all four of his broncs, including the one he rode in the finals on Saturday night, for a total of 331 points. The runner-up, Jamie Howlett of West Texas College, had 305 after four rides.

“There wasn’t much more Wyatt could have done,” said CSC rodeo coach Dustin Luper. “He rode well.  It was mostly just the luck of the draw.”

The barebacks, as a group, apparently weren’t particularly rank. Just 21 of the 122 riders were bucked off before their eight seconds were up.

On the other hand, 66 of the 116 saddle bronc rides ended before the horn had sounded. And, only 16 of the 117 bull rides produced a score. None of the 12 finalists in the bull riding Saturday night was able to stay aboard eight seconds.
