CHADRON – The Chadron State College Art Guild received a Community Benefactor Award from the Spirit of Nebraska Girl Scout organization Nov. 10. The award was presented to the group for its work organizing and hosting an artVenture Day for girls from kindergarten through 12th grade the past three years.

Teena Redfern, a former member of the CSC Art Guild and a parent affiliated with Girl Scouts nominated the Art Guild for the award. She said the event has served an average of 34 girls the past three years. The attendees have been from Chadron, Crawford, Gordon, Hemingford and Sidney.

The event, which takes place in Memorial Hall has included college students, faculty and residents teaching acrylic painting, watercolor painting, jewelry making, graphic design, drawing, calligraphy, photography, ceramics, polymer clay and textiles. Art Guild members were responsible for deciding what art forms to include and how many girls could participate.

“They ordered supplies, scheduled the rooms and recruited local artists, all while being full-time students. Without them agreeing to do this, our girls wouldn’t be able to do this very popular project in Chadron. Without the Art Guild, the girls would have to travel considerable distances to participate in artVenture” Redfern said.

Items created at artVenture Day are sold at a combined fundraising auction and reception hosted by area Girl Scouts after the projects are completed, according to Redfern.

Girl Scout professional from Alliance, Nebraska, Krista Blumanthal, said the effectiveness and popularity of the Chadron program is evident because similar events in Scottsbluff and Sidney are based on it.

Emily Linegar, former Art Guild president, said it was amazing to receive an award that recognizes the amount of effort guild members dedicated to the program to help local Girl Scouts learn about art and receive their badges.

Art faculty member Dr. Mary Donahue sponsors the Art Guild. CSC students who participated in artVenture are as follows: Katie Krebs, Emily Sample Linegar, Cassie Anderson, Julya Briseno, Chris Carattini, Heather Clark, Chris Green, Macee Kellner, Vicki Lawler, Jesse Manke, Matt Ellis, Kevin Kubo and Kaitlin Macke.

CSC employees or community members interested in volunteering with artVenture Day scheduled for Jan. 23, 2016, may contact Redfern at teenaredfern@yahoo.com.

Students interested in joining Art Guild should contact Donahue at mdonahue@csc.edu.
