Wilderness author to open Galaxy Series

The presentation will be Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Hall Auditorium. Admission will be free.

This event is part of a continuing series of cultural and educational events this year in western Nebraska celebrating the 50^th anniversary of the Wilderness Act.

Sutter, an associate professor at the University of Colorado in Boulder, will speak about the beginnings of the wilderness movement and sign copies of his book, “Driven Wild: How the Fight against Automobiles Launched the Modern Wilderness Movement,” following the presentation.

As an added feature, photo entries in the Forest Service’s “Wilderness Shoot Out” photo contest, earlier this summer, will be on display in Memorial Hall’s lobby.

In addition to his presentation for the campus and community, Sutter plans to visit at least one CSC classroom while he is on campus. Shellie Johns, who coordinates the Galaxy Series, said she plans to encourage all Galaxy artists and performers to interact with students, share career advice and provide other outreach opportunities.

Sutter is the editor of “Environmental History and the American South: A Reader” and the series editor for Weyerhaeuser Environmental Books. He has received major fellowships from the Smithsonian Institution, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Institutes of Health. His numerous essays on environmental historiography include a June 2013 essay in the Journal of American History and the “Soils of the South” will be published in 2015.
